With Services every day throughout the year, visitors are welcomed into one of Europes finest
Cathedrals. The York Minster shop offers a large selection of unique and interesting gifts to suit both local customers and the many visitors that come to York each year.
Audio guide to the Undercroft, Treasury & Crypt
'The Story of the Minster through the Ages' is a new audio tour of the Undercroft, designed to give the pilgrim or visitor new ways to enjoy their visit to York Minster. The story is told via a handheld Antenna Audio with headphones, allowing the visitor to explore the history of the Minster at his own speed.
Descending into the Undercroft is like going back into time. When the Central Tower threatened to collapse, work was done to shore up its foundations from 1967 to 1972. Whilst securing the foundations that hold up the 16,000 tonne Tower, workers found the remains of buildings that once existed on this site. You can see the ancient remains discovered beneath the present Minster when archaeologists worked on one of the most important sites in England.
The new audio guide leads the visitor around a fascinating tour of the Undercroft, Treasury and Crypt, bringing to life the past of York Minster. Visitors can discover the atmosphere of the Roman street as they walk through the remains of the basilica, listen to the Norman builders at work on the Norman cathedral and marvel at the medieval Minster, with its rich collection of treasures from the tombs of the archbishops. Time can also be set aside to pause in the atmospheric Crypts for a moment of reflection and meditation, surrounded by centuries of history.
