Bath
The city of Bath, in Somerset, is famous for its hot springs and spa water, its Roman history and its Georgian architecture.
It is a World Heritage Site.
Bath is also one of the best shopping centres in the south west of England, in addition to all the familiar names and big stores there's a fabulous choice of smaller specialist and independent shops.
King Bladud, the father of King Lear, was crowned in Bath, and Jane Austen lived in Bath and set two of her novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion, in the city.
There are many fascinating museums in Bath, including the Roman Baths Museum, which is one of the top ten attractions in Britain, the Costume Museum, the Jane Austen Centre - a new permanent exhibition which tells the story of Jane's Bath experience, and the Museum of East Asian Art which houses significant collections of objects from East Asia, among many others.
The Bath Postal Museum is located at the address where the letter bearing the first postage stamp was sent from, and The William Herschel Museum dedicated to the musician and astronomer William Herschel, in the building where he discovered the planet Uranus.
One of only two bridges in Europe to support shops, the majestic Pulteney Bridge crosses the river Avon uniting east and west Bath. The eminent architect Robert Adam was commission by Sir William Pulteney to provide a fitting approach to the Pulteney estate, and the bridge, completed in 1770, was the impressive result.
The bridge today has many small eccentric shops, and a good variety of restaurants serving Italian, Thai, Indian and French cuisine, all two minutes walk from Carfax's front door.
