Newton AbbotThe historic old town of Newton Abbot is the administrative and commercial centre of the district, and it has served the needs of the large surrounding rural area for centuries. There has been a market in Newton Abbot since 1220. The present open market operates every Wednesday and Saturday, with the adjacent Pannier indoor market hall opening six days a week, and a Cattle Market and auction held on Wednesdays. The town centre has several streets and pedestrianised walks offering an interesting mixture of shops, with high street names and specialised family owned businesses. Around the town there are attractive gardens and parks, a Museum, Cinema, Leisure Centre, Indoor bowls and ten-pin bowling, and a Tourist Information Centre. The famous Newton Abbot Racecourse has steeplechase horse racing throughout the year, and is also used as a venue for a range of other events. Other Newton Abbot attractions include the Tuckers Maltings Visitor Centre, The Prickly Ball Hedgehog Hospital (a great attraction, popular with children and hedgehogs!), and two historic houses. Old Forde House is open by appointment; it was visited in 1625 by Charles 1, and also accommodated William of Orange and Fairfax. Bradley Manor House is on the edge of town along the bank of the river Lemon. This is one of the oldest inhabited house in Devon and is now a National Trust property, with house and gardens open to the public. |
